The Rainbow Falls in India's Meghalaya region have probably caught your attention. Instead of relying on words, rely on images to convey your ideas better. The trek to Rainbow Falls from Nongriat will allow you to continue your exploration of the Double Decker live root bridge.
How To Reach Rainbow Falls
At Nongriat, you may either return to Tyrna (which would be a shame), travel to Rainbow Falls and back (which for most people would be too much to handle in a single day), or stay overnight (which is the right thing to do). After a good night's sleep and a refreshed battery, make your way to Rainbow Falls. In certain places, the journey to Rainbow Falls is breathtakingly gorgeous and exhilarating. Before reaching the picturesque waterfall, you'll have to cross the Mawsaw steel bridge, which hangs over the river valley. You'll also have to cross a few root bridges along the way.
While the Tyrna – Nongriat trek was challenging, going from Nongriat to Rainbow Falls and back was another experience. One of the most challenging parts of the journey will be because the road is not "paved" with sturdy stairwells like the one between Tyrna and Nongiat. There is no need for a guide because the trail is well-marked. However, it might be muddy and treacherous after a rainstorm. The second factor facilitates the process. It's not necessary to climb a lot of hills to get to Rainbow Falls. The hike has a slight ascent but is not particularly difficult.
If you're short on time but still want to see Rainbow Falls, walk 30 minutes from Nongriat to the Mawsaw steel bridge and take in the sights and sounds of the crossing.
Accommodation And Food At Rainbow Falls
Automobiles and light trucks can't go past Tyrna. As a result, grabbing a few snacks or water bottles should be the last thing on your mind. Tyrna, on the other hand, is a secluded and tiny settlement. Cherapunjee or Shillong are the best places to get goods.
Tea, cookies, and the occasional pineapple are sold at a few snack kiosks along the stairwell. Some of the tea shacks have a million-dollar view of the valley from their balconies or terraces. You can only receive hot, prepared food at your lodging. Be ready for essential, plain cuisine. Serene Home-stay serves up some of the best cuisines around.
Nongriat
The only place to stay along the way is in Nongriat. In the village, there are just a handful of tiny homestays. There is a restriction on the number of people that can fit in those 4-5 spots. It's possible that you'll have to return to Tyrna the same day if all the rooms are taken, in which case you'll have to spend the night. It is not something that happens all the time, and most people will go out of their way to help you, but you never know. Please keep your expectations in check and reserve your home well in advance.
Best Time To Visit Rainbow Falls
Meghalaya's Rainbow Falls are at their most beautiful in the early morning or late evening.
Visit Meghalaya during the rainy season, and you'll save a lot of money. The wet or dry season is just as good for a trip. The best time to visit is right after the rainy season has ended. Despite the fact that rivers remain overflowing, it hasn't rained much recently.
When we went to see Rainbow Falls, it was in the off-season. The benefit of hiking in the dry season is that the terrain is dry and more accessible. The drawback is that rivers and waterfalls both dry up completely. During or immediately after rain, a visit means that the waterfalls will be awe-inspiring, and river crossings will be especially exciting. It will be muddy and slippery, though, to travel to sites like Rainbow Waterfall.
